Petflakes is manufactured in Lebanon, at Rea Trading Company's facility on the Adshit Main Road in Kfardajjal, Nabatieh. The food is produced there from raw ingredients — it is not imported and rebagged.

It is genuinely made in Lebanon. Formulation, extrusion, cooking and packing all happen at the Nabatieh facility. Some raw ingredients are imported, as they are for every pet food brand in the world, but the food itself is manufactured locally.

Petflakes controls the starch level rather than removing grains altogether. It depends on weight and activity. For an adult dog at normal activity: 5 kg needs about 65 g a day, 10 kg about 120 g, 20 kg about 200 g, 30 kg about 270 g, 40 kg about 335 g, 60 kg about 455 g, and 80 kg about 570 g. Find your dog's adult weight in the left column, then read across to the column matching its activity level: "Interactive / Older" for less active or senior dogs, "Normal Activities" for a typical pet, and "Active" for working or high-energy dogs. The figure is the total for the whole day, not per meal.

Adult dogs are usually fed twice a day — split the daily amount into a morning and an evening portion. Puppies under six months generally need three to four smaller meals a day.

Puppy amounts depend on age and expected adult weight rather than current weight, and they change quickly. Follow the table on the Performance Puppy bag and reweigh your puppy every two weeks. A puppy should stay lean — you should be able to feel the ribs easily without pressing hard.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They rely on protein for energy in a way dogs don't, and they cannot reduce protein breakdown when intake drops. That's why Petflakes cat formulas run at 30–33% crude protein while the adult dog formula sits at 25%.

Dehydrated chicken meat leads every cat recipe, with hydrolyzed chicken liver meal, rice, maize flour, wheat flour, wheat bran, soybean meal and beet pulp. Fats come from chicken fat, vegetable oil, rapeseed oil and fish oil. Every recipe includes added taurine, a full vitamin premix, chelated minerals, psyllium, hydrolyzed yeast, yucca extract and rosemary extract.

No. All four cat formulas contain rice, maize flour, wheat flour and wheat bran as digestible carbohydrate sources, within a controlled-starch formulation.

The current Petflakes cat range is built on chicken as its primary protein across all four formulas. Fish oil is included for omega-3 fatty acids, but there is no fish-based or alternative-protein recipe at present.

Performance Kitten Food, at 33% crude protein, 18% crude fat and 4,140 kcal/kg — the most energy-dense food in the Petflakes range. Growing kittens need roughly two to three times the energy per kilogram of body weight that an adult cat does.

By age: about 50 g a day at 2 months, 45 g at 3 months, 40 g at 4 months, 35 g at 5 months, 30 g at 6 months, and 20–30 g from 7 to 12 months. The daily amount falls as the kitten grows, because growth slows while body size rises. Split it across three or four small meals.

At around 12 months for most cats. Large slow-maturing breeds such as Maine Coons can stay on kitten food until about 18 months. Move across gradually over seven to ten days.

For Performance Adult Cat Food: a 2–3 kg cat needs 30–45 g a day, 3–4 kg needs 45–50 g, 4–5 kg needs 60–75 g, 5–7 kg needs 75–105 g, and 7–10 kg needs 105–135 g. Start in the middle of the range and adjust by body condition over a few weeks.

Maintenance Sterilized Cat Food. Sterilised cats need noticeably fewer calories, and this formula is built for that: 11.5% crude fat and 3,235 kcal/kg, against 16% fat and 4,040 kcal/kg in the adult formula — around 20% less energy per gram — while holding protein at 30% to protect lean muscle. Fibre is raised to 5% so the cat still feels full.

Neutering lowers a cat's energy requirement by roughly a quarter while appetite often stays the same, which is why weight gain after the operation is so common. Cutting fat and calories while keeping protein high lets the cat eat a normal-looking bowl without the surplus energy.

Around seven years old is the usual point, though it depends on the individual cat. Maintenance Senior Cat Food runs at 31% protein and 14% fat, with phosphorus at 0.6% — the lowest in the Petflakes cat range — and fibre at 5%.

For Maintenance Senior Cat Food: about 35 g a day for a 2 kg cat, 45 g at 3 kg, 55 g at 4 kg, 65 g at 5 kg, 70 g at 6 kg and 80 g at 7 kg. Older cats often lose rather than gain weight, so weigh your cat monthly and raise the amount if it's dropping.

Urinary tract health depends heavily on mineral balance and water intake. Petflakes cat formulas are produced to controlled mineral specifications, and the guaranteed analysis on each bag publishes calcium and phosphorus levels. If your cat has a history of urinary crystals or blockage, discuss its diet with your vet — this is a case where a prescription diet may be the right answer.

Yes, but portion carefully. Indoor cats burn less energy than cats with outdoor access, so feed at the lower end of the range for your cat's weight and check body condition monthly. If your indoor cat is also neutered, the Sterilized formula is the better fit.

You can — cats naturally eat many small meals — but measure the day's full portion in the morning and let that be all the cat gets. Free-feeding straight from the bag is the most common cause of feline obesity. In a multi-cat household it also makes it impossible to tell who is eating how much.

Not ideally. Kitten food is far more energy-dense — 4,140 kcal/kg against 3,235 in the sterilised adult formula — so an adult eating kitten food gains weight, and a kitten eating adult food may not get enough to grow properly. Feed separately and pick up bowls after 20 minutes.

Over seven to ten days, more slowly than for a dog. Cats are neophobic about food and can refuse an abrupt change outright. Days 1–3: 25% Petflakes. Days 4–6: half and half. Days 7–9: 75%. Day 10: fully switched. Never let a cat go without eating for more than 24 hours during a transition.

Go slower — start at 10% new food rather than 25%. Warm the food slightly to release the aroma, serve in a wide shallow bowl away from the litter tray, and don't leave a rejected bowl sitting out. Never starve a cat into accepting food: cats that stop eating for more than about 48 hours risk hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition. Call your vet if your cat refuses all food for 24 hours.

For a 4 kg adult cat eating around 65 g a day, roughly three weeks. For a 4 kg senior at 55 g a day, about four weeks. For a three-month-old kitten at 45 g a day, about a month. Finishing a bag within six weeks of opening keeps the food at its best.

Transition gradually. For dogs, over seven days: 25% Petflakes for days 1–2, half and half for days 3–4, 75% for days 5–6, and fully switched by day 7. For cats, stretch it to ten days. A gradual change gives gut bacteria time to adapt.

Almost always the change was too fast. Go back to the previous mix for three to four days until stools firm up, then move forward more slowly. If loose stools last more than 48 hours, or you see blood, vomiting or lethargy, see your vet.

Stool quality usually settles within one to two weeks. Changes in coat condition and energy typically take four to eight weeks, because coat turnover is slow. Give any new food a full six weeks before judging it.

Yes. Warm — not hot — water softens the kibble and releases aroma, which helps fussy eaters, animals with dental problems and older pets. Add it just before serving and discard anything uneaten after about 20 minutes.

You can, but reduce the kibble portion accordingly or your pet will gain weight. If toppers make up more than about 10% of daily calories, the balanced nutrition of the complete diet starts to be diluted.

Weigh it. A kitchen scale costs very little and removes the single biggest source of accidental overfeeding — cups vary enormously depending on how the kibble settles. Every Petflakes feeding table is given in grams for this reason.

Run your hands along the ribs: you should feel them easily under a thin covering, without pressing. Seen from above there should be a visible waist behind the ribs, and from the side the belly should tuck up. If you can't feel ribs at all, reduce the portion by about 10% and reassess in a month.

Yes, and they add up faster than people expect. Keep treats under about 10% of daily calories and subtract them from the meal portion. A few pieces of cheese can be a quarter of a small cat's daily energy.

No. Petflakes is a complete and balanced diet, with added vitamins, chelated minerals, omega fatty acids and taurine. Adding calcium or vitamin supplements on top can unbalance it — particularly for growing puppies and kittens. Only supplement on a vet's advice.

Dry food contains very little moisture, so fresh water must always be available. Cats in particular have a weak thirst drive and often drink less than they should — a wide bowl away from the food, or a pet fountain, usually increases intake. Sudden heavy drinking is worth a vet visit.

Yes. Transition gradually as above. Older animals that have eaten one food for a long time sometimes resist change more strongly, so take ten days rather than seven and be patient.

Somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, with the bag sealed after every use. Heat and humidity are what degrade fats and make food go stale — which matters in a Lebanese summer. A cupboard away from the stove beats a balcony or a garage.

Yes. The bag is a barrier against light, air and moisture, and it carries the batch code and best-before date you would need if there were ever a problem. If you prefer a bin, put the whole sealed bag inside it rather than tipping the kibble out.

Aim to finish an opened bag within about six weeks, and sooner in hot weather. Once the fats begin to oxidise the food smells stale and becomes less palatable even though it looks unchanged. Buy a bag size your pet will get through in that window.

Small variation in colour or shade between batches is normal, because natural ingredients vary. What is controlled is nutrient composition and particle size — every batch is formulated to hit the same guaranteed analysis and verified in the in-house laboratory. If kibble smells rancid, looks mouldy or shows signs of pests, stop feeding it and contact us with the batch code.

The ingredients are cooked with steam rather than dry heat. It gelatinises the starches so they're easier to digest, and the temperature kills pathogens such as salmonella — which is why the food is described as germ free — while being gentler on heat-sensitive nutrients than harsher methods.

Extrusion forces the cooked dough through a shaped die and cuts it into pieces. It produces a light, porous kibble that is easy to chew, highly digestible, and able to carry fats and flavour on its surface for palatability.

Shape and size affect how an animal chews. A kibble that's too small gets swallowed whole; one that's too large is hard for small jaws. No. Every Petflakes recipe, for both cats and dogs, is built on dehydrated chicken meat as its primary protein, so the range is not suitable for an animal with a diagnosed chicken allergy. Work with your vet on an elimination diet before concluding your pet is allergic — true food allergies are less common than people assume, and chicken is over-diagnosed.

Many animals with mild sensitivity do well on it: the food is steam cooked for digestibility and includes beet pulp, psyllium and hydrolyzed yeast to support the gut. Transition over a full week or more. If your pet has ongoing digestive problems, get a veterinary diagnosis first — the right answer may be a prescription diet.

An occasional stolen mouthful won't harm a healthy dog, but cat food is too high in protein and fat for a dog long term and can cause weight gain and digestive upset. In multi-pet homes, feed in separate rooms or raise the cat's bowl out of the dog's reach.

Chronic kidney disease usually calls for a therapeutic diet with tightly restricted phosphorus and moderated protein, prescribed and monitored by a vet. Petflakes is a complete maintenance food, not a therapeutic renal diet, and should not be used to manage diagnosed kidney disease. Talk to your vet.

Diabetes management depends on consistent, veterinary-directed feeding and often a specific therapeutic diet. Petflakes is a maintenance food and is not formulated for diabetic management. Do not change a diabetic animal's diet without speaking to your vet, since it affects insulin dosing.
